Emergency Roof Repair: What to Do When Your Roof Is Leaking

Minimize damage while emergency service is on the way.

April 17, 2026 • Houston Roofing

Your roof is leaking. Water is coming in. If you are reading this in that situation, call us immediately at (713) 527-2719 for same-day emergency response. Below is what to do in the minutes and hours before we arrive.

Emergency service: Call (713) 527-2719 now. Available same-day for Houston-area active leaks.

Step 1: Protect Interior Valuables

Move furniture, electronics, and valuables out of the affected area. Cover anything you cannot move with plastic sheeting or tarps. Water damage to furniture and electronics often costs more than the roof repair itself.

Step 2: Capture the Water

Place buckets, pots, or trash cans under active drips. Line them with towels to reduce splash. If water is running down walls or through ceiling fixtures, put down additional towels and containers to limit spread.

If a section of ceiling is sagging or bulging, carefully puncture the lowest point with a screwdriver into a bucket. This controlled release prevents a much larger collapse of water-logged drywall.

Step 3: Turn Off Power in Affected Areas

If water is running near electrical fixtures (light fixtures, outlets, ceiling fans), turn off the breaker for that area at the main panel. Water and electricity together are dangerous.

Step 4: Document the Damage

Photograph everything — the source of the leak (if visible), the interior damage, containers catching water, affected items. These photos matter for insurance claims. Video is even better where you can show active dripping.

Step 5: Do NOT Climb on the Roof

Wet roofs are dangerous. Houston homeowner attempts at DIY roof repair during rain cause serious injuries every year. Call a professional — we have proper safety equipment, insurance, and techniques to work on wet roofs safely.

Step 6: Call Houston Roofing

Call (713) 527-2719 and describe what you are seeing. A crew will be dispatched same-day whenever possible. For active severe leaks, we prioritize response and typically arrive within a few hours.

When we arrive, we will:

What to Expect for Permanent Repair

Temporary weatherproofing usually holds for days to weeks. Permanent repair is scheduled when weather cooperates and proper materials are on-site. Most emergency-followed-by-permanent repair cycles are completed within a week.

If the leak is caused by storm damage that warrants an insurance claim, we coordinate directly with your insurance company. See our storm damage repair page for claim process details.

After the Emergency: Interior Damage

Once the roof is weatherproofed, address interior damage separately. Wet drywall, ceiling tiles, and insulation often need replacement. Active water exposure lasting more than 48 hours can lead to mold growth — if significant interior water intrusion occurred, engage a water mitigation company to dry the area properly.

For non-emergency roof repair (slow leaks, known damage that is not actively dripping), see our roof repair page. For any emergency, call now at (713) 527-2719.
