What to Expect During a Houston Roof Replacement

Day-by-day timeline and preparation checklist.

April 17, 2026 • Houston Roofing

Replacing your roof is one of the larger disruptions you will ever schedule for your home — but with proper expectations, it goes smoothly. Here is what a typical Houston Roofing residential replacement looks like from your side of the project.

Day -3 to Day -1: Preparation

What we do: Confirm the delivery date with materials suppliers. Schedule dumpster delivery if the project requires one. Confirm the start date with you.

What you do:

Day 1: Tear-Off

The crew arrives early (typically 6:30-7:00 AM). Materials are staged and tarps are placed to protect landscaping. Tear-off begins.

Expect significant noise for 4-8 hours while old shingles are removed. You can stay home if you want — the work is outside, not inside — though many homeowners prefer to be elsewhere for part of tear-off day.

As shingles come off, decking is exposed and inspected. If damaged decking is found (which is common on older Houston homes), it is replaced and you are notified. Additional decking is included in the original estimate for allowances — anything beyond the allowance is discussed before additional work begins.

Day 1-2: Underlayment and Flashing

Once the deck is clean and any repairs complete, underlayment (synthetic or felt) is installed. Ice-and-water shield is applied at roof edges, valleys, and around penetrations. New flashing is installed around chimneys, skylights, vents, and roof-to-wall transitions — this is one of the most important parts of the job and our crew takes time to do it right.

Day 2-3: Shingle Installation

New shingles go down starting at the eaves and working up to the ridge. For most Houston homes this is a 1-2 day process. Metal and tile take 3-5 days. Each course is aligned properly, nailed per manufacturer specifications (critical for wind-rating validity), and sealed.

Day 3: Final Details and Cleanup

Ridge caps and final details are completed. The crew then runs magnetic sweepers over your yard, driveway, and walkways to collect dropped nails — important for tire and foot safety. Gutters are cleared of debris from the project. Tarps are removed and landscaping is restored.

A final walkthrough is scheduled with the project manager. You inspect the work with us, we review the warranty paperwork, and we address any questions or concerns before considering the project complete.

After Completion

You receive closeout paperwork including:

Keep this paperwork — it is important for future insurance claims and home resale.

Common Concerns and Answers

Can I stay in the house? Yes. Work is outside and the home remains habitable throughout.

Will my landscaping be damaged? Not if we have done our job. Tarps protect plantings from falling debris.

What if it rains? We check the forecast carefully. If rain is imminent, we stage work to keep the roof weatherproof overnight with felt and tarps.

What about my pets? Noise affects them. Many owners board pets for the day or move them to a quiet room away from the work area.
